Department of Special Constructing Equipment

Established under an academic-military cooperation agreement between the Army Headquarters and Gumi University, the Department of Special Constructing Equipment is the only department in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do region that trains non-commissioned technical officers.
Curriculum: The design, maintenance, and operation of construction equipment, engineering equipment, chemical equipment, and special equipment.
  • Students selected for the non-commissioned officer scholarship receive tuition support from the Army Headquarters for two semesters at Gumi University.
  • Once students graduate, they begin serving as non-commissioned technical officers and transfer into the Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon.
  • As they serve as non-commissioned officers, students receive pay and benefits on par with grade-8 or grade-9 public officials - Welfare Benefits: Complimentary accommodation, opportunities to continue undergraduate and postgraduate education, school expenses for children, etc.
  • When discharged, students will receive additional points if they apply for a position as a civilian worker in the military or at a defense contractor.

Department of National Defense Chemistry

The Department of National Defense Chemistry was the first department of its kind in Korea established under an academic-military cooperation agreement between a University and the Army Headquarters. Specifically, the Department develops Army non-commissioned officers specializing in chemicals entrusted with the future of our country. In particular, the Department offers foundational education, helps students acquire professional certificates in hazardous materials/environment field, and instills good morals in students to develop experts equipped with the expert capacity and professionalism required in today’s global world.

Department of National Defense Medical Service

The Department of National Defense Medical Service was the first department of its kind in Korea established under an academic-military cooperation agreement between a University and the Army Headquarters. Specifically, the Department develops Army non-commissioned officers specializing emergency rescue services expected to serve a vital role in the Army medical departments.
Once enrolled, students study essential courses they need in order to become a leader in the Army. Specifically, they learn medical courses e.g. emergency rescue studies, foundational nursing, patient transportation, hospital administrative management, and other military courses e.g. leadership, counseling techniques, medical equipment, supply management, physical training, etc. Given the program is an on-demand-type education program based on the University’s academic-military cooperation agreement with the Army Headquarters, students selected for the program at Gumi University (Army scholarship student/civilian non-commission officer) are given priority status when the Army accepts non-commissioned officers. As such, the program guarantees students a stable workplace (staff sergeants receive wages and benefits on par with grade-9 public officials). Once students begin their service, the Army provides housing, other outsourced education opportunities for personal improvement, opportunities to acquire a grade-1 or grade-2 first responder certificate, and a variety of welfare benefits. Not only that, Army service as a medical specialist can be acknowledged as professional career experience. As such, it will become advantageous when students get discharged and seek employment in private medical institutions. Once students graduate from their undergraduate program, they begin serving as non-commissioned officers specializing in medical care. If they complete the major program for non-commissioned officers specializing in medical care, who manages medical affairs, emergency first aid, rescue operations in the Army, students can earn the grade-2 first responder certificate (national-level examination) acknowledged by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and a specialist degree in medical affairs and emergency rescue.
In the Army, students will be dispatched to medical stations at battalions or medical battalions under Army divisions. They will be expected to lead medics and oversee emergency first aid and emergency rescue operations. Students may also serve at the Army Hospitals in Seoul, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Gwangju-etc. Or other field hospitals on a rotating basis to learn medical administration, clerical work, supply affairs, and other emergency rescue-related aspects.
